The Brown Mosten Client Consultation Competition is run on a not-for-profit basis entirely by volunteers. Forrest S Mosten has served as Chair of the competition for over twenty-five years. There are Executive Officers, members of various committees, competition hosts, national representatives from member countries and other helpers.
The genesis of the competition was a client counseling competition for law students which was first established by Professor Louis M Brown in the United States in 1969. The American Bar Association adopted the competition in 1972, and it became international in 1985. The international competition was named after Louis M Brown in 1993 in recognition of the inspiration he provided as its originator. The competition's name was changed from "client counseling" to "client consultation" in 2010, as it was felt that this term better reflected the collaborative lawyer-client process. The name of Californian lawyer Forrest S Mosten was added to the title at the same time, in recognition of his immense contribution to the growth and development of the competition.
