Client consultations in the competition take place in a simulated law office. A team of two law students or freshly-trained lawyers meets with an actor pretending to be a client with a legal problem. They are entitled to choose the jurisdiction in which the interview takes place, and will normally choose their home country. The students must interact with the client skilfully, developing rapport and eliciting a complete and accurate picture of the situation before providing the client with appropriate legal and practical advice. The assessment criteria point out that the students should assist the client in his or her understanding of problems and potential solutions, empowering the client to make an informed choice about future steps. Difficult situations and ethical pitfalls are common.
