The Client Consultation Ideal
A good legal counselor:
- treats his/her/their client with respect
- treats all people as equally deserving of respect regardless of gender, race, religion, sexual preference or other characteristics
- works to establish rapport and an effective working relationship with the client
- acquires sufficient information from the client prior to giving advice
- takes practical as well as legal factors into account in advising the client
- secures the consent of the client before taking action, unless otherwise required by law
- empowers the client to make effective decisions by providing information and support, but does not make decisions for the client
