What Students Say
"The competition was a lot of fun, but it also helped me to develop a lot of the soft skills that employers look for. I enjoyed the whole interview process: the niceties around ensuring that a client is comfortable and happy to discuss their issue, questioning them and unpicking their statements to drive at the truth of the situation, and devising a solution that has their best legal and commercial interests at its core. These are important skills for lawyers, as they need to be able to engage with clients and understand their priorities." Dominic Griffin Sussex Law School |
"Participation in the 2024 Brown Mosten International Client Consultation Competition held in Lublin, Poland has been one of the most valuable experiences of my legal education so far. ... From the very first day and the opening ceremony, it was clear that this would be an experience I would remember for years. That initial impression only deepened over the following days, as we saw firsthand the exceptional level of professionalism, organization, and attention to detail that defined every aspect of the competition. What followed was far more than just an academic contest, it was an opportunity to explore empathy, communication, and cross-cultural understanding. ... With each round, we became better listeners, more thoughtful communicators and more attuned to the emotional dynamics of client interaction."

The initial client interview forms the basis for the lawyer-client relationship. The establishment of rapport supports trust and candor, and clear discussion of the legal situation and options allows the client to make an informed choice.

When people are in trouble, legal trouble, and they come in to see a lawyer, they want someone who cares, who is empathic, who wants to help them solve the problem and treats them like an equal, not like a subject.
