University of Windsor, Canada
27-30 April 2016
In addition to the main event of the competition, the 2016 ICCC was jam-packed with very enjoyable activities including getting to try lacrosse (much harder than it looks on TV!); the scavenger hunt through the law school building; a master class with Julie McFarlane; the culture night with presentations by teams; tours of Willistead Manor, the courthouse, and the local distillery; a visit to the local outlet mall; and a pancake breakfast.
Nineteen countries were due to participate, but Nigeria unfortunately had to withdraw because of problems obtaining visas. This left Australia, Canada, England/Wales, Georgia, Germany, India, Iran, Ireland, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Northern Ireland, Poland, Scotland, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and USA. The topic was Marital Issues. The final round problem involved two clients who had married spontaneously and very recently on a cruise ship and were still together but who wished to void the marriage. In addition to the family law issues, there was a potential conflict of interest involved in representing two clients.
Eve Bain and Fayez Shahbaz from Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand won the competition. Scotland came second and England/Wales came third.
