Nineteen countries participated in the 2013 BMICCC (Australia, Cambodia, Canada, China, England/Wales, Georgia, Germany, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Puerto Rico, Scotland, Switzerland, Turkey and USA. Unfortunately, some countries had visa problems (China, Iran, Nigeria and Sri Lanka) and had to withdraw or re-constitute their teams at a late date.
The topic was serious crimes against the person. The final round problem involved a client who was the mother of a young handicapped child and was thinking of “mercy killing”. Other scenarios at the competition involved a client who had bashed a person with a brick following a fight which started at a pub, a client whose husband disappeared from a cruise ship in suspicious circumstances, and a client who accused a teen of bullying her child on a website, which lead to the alleged offender being bashed and put in hospital.
Semi-finalists included New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, Australia, Northern Ireland, Puerto Rico, England and the USA. (Germany and the Netherlands narrowly missed breaking to the elimination rounds.) It was a very close decision in the final round (Chair Forrest Mosten called the initial result a hitherto unprecedented exact tie on points), but the Canadian team was victorious following a re-vote which resulted in a 3-2 split decision. New Zealand came second, and Scotland was third.
